so I fly out there Dec 10th-29th! I start school in January and can't miss too much work otherwise I would stay pass new years. send me that email like u said and I will really try to come out. As free of a spirit as I am, my family knows that I'm not afraid to travel and explore. I mentioned the skim contest and they're already trying to freak me out by saying that it's not safe to travel there alone since I'm an American girl that could get snatched up by the rebels and so forth. I'm sorry but I don't live in negative intentions. I feel that if I surround myself with love and positive vibes that God will protect me. I understand though. They are just looking out for me. If I'm guna come out for a few days of the contest we have to make sure my travels are secure so my family won't worry. Either way, I am a grown woma n that could do whatever I want. I just don't want to make my family uncomfortable. I'm so eXcited!
why is the contest from 26th-30th so long? I might not be able to be there for all 5 days but I will try my hardest to go if I am invited! I am looking at plane tickets as I write you. =)
Komusta ka? I think that's how u spell it. Well . . . I'm really eXcited because I finally get to dive into the roots of my culture since I will be coming out to P.I. in December for the 1st time. I don't have my plane ticket yet but I plan to fly out b4 the 10th. I was hoping you could give me advice on where the hot spots to skim are. My family lives in Mabalacat, Pampanga of Angeles City (Luzon). I have no idea how far that is from where you live but I would love to meet up with you and play on the beach. I had a talk with Victoria about sending me out there with a package full of give-aways for all the local skimmers in P.I. I hope they do put that together. If not, I will probably bring an extra board to don8 for some friends to share who cannot afford a board. I have so many ?s but I think I will w8 for u to respond. Salamat & ALOHA

Hey Arlene! lol, well I am glad to say that I have girl skimboarder friends from the PI. Last November a group of us got together and started a Hawaii Amateur Skimboarding League, HASL. It was set up so that local skimmers from Hawaii could gain experience in competing and for those who wanted to, they could go travel to California, the East Coast and anywhere else to compete in skimboarding. It was a great way to unite all the skimmers and get to know everyone. Since we started there has been a growth in skimboarding and I it has been a lot of fun. I do all of the contest flyers and posters. I film and edit all the contest videos and I am currently helping them to develop a new website. http://hawaiiamateurskimboardleague when you have time check it out.
As far as contest guidelines go, even here in the USA they don't have standardized rules yet but they are trying to establish some. Mostly commonly the rules will consist of:
10 minute heats/ pro heats may be 12 minutes
Each skimmer is judged on 5 of their highest scoring waves,*important* 2 going left, 2 going right and 1 of next highest scores. (this encourages a well rounded rider, and is why I find it important).
Judges score on a 1-10 scale
these seem to be the most common guidelines I've seen. I have done contests on the East Coast, Delaware and they don't make the riders go both right and left on waves, and in Hawaii we do not do a single elimination like the other contests I have been in. Hawaii does judging across the board, meaning that when you compete in a heat you're not only competing against the guys in your heat but everyone in your division. This allows everyone to skim at least twice, but there are flaws with choosing this approach. Another contest I've been in they judge each person in a heat on what place the judges think the skimmer came in. so if there were four people in a heat the judges would assign each skimmer a number 1, 2, 3, or 4. and who ever had the lowest number would be 1st place in that heat and move onto the next.
lol sorry it's very long. There are lots of ways how people run contests, depending on how competitive the skim scene is. Let me know if you guys need help, if find it's easier some rules to work better than others. I'm always willing to help.
sweet glad to see you like bob. one of our dear friends and pro riders for skim boarding is jazi j. she writes for skim boarding now...talk to her shes on the island and really kewl
YAY a fellow pinay skimma! My mom is from Pampanga but I grew up in LA, Ca. I was raised with roots as first born in America so I speak Kapampangan pretty fluently. I plan to visit for my first time in Jan 2010. I have been living in Hawaii for 2 years now and wouldn't trade my life for anything. I live my dreams everyday because I do what makes me happy while inspiring others. You seem like a girl I would hang out with. Keep ripping cuz the female skim circuit is only growing! I see BIG things in the future for our sport. . . SOL SHRED'm 4eva
